After two degrees in electrical and systems engineering and working in industry for a few years, Michael Tobis decided he could best contribute to society as a scientist, and began to study the climate system. For his thesis work, he built an ocean model from scratch on a 144-CPU supercomputing platform that his advisor's group built from scratch in the early 1990s for which he did the circuit design. As a professional scientist, his focus was on bringing modern software methodologies to the practice of climate model development. Simultaneously he has been trying to understand the climate problem as a whole system in which social and economic factors are a component. He has recently retired from formal research at the University of Texas and is now focused entirely on climate communication. He lives in and enjoys downtown Austin TX.
